Session 2

How Civil Societies Can Make a Difference in a Troubled World

Saturday, 2 September 2023

10:15 - 11:15 (GMT+7)

Shifting political landscapes, social dynamics, and technological disruptions present multifaceted challenges to the foundations of civil society all over the world. In 2021, according to the V–Dem Institute, 35 countries experienced notable declines in their levels of freedom of expression due to government actions, marking a substantial rise compared to merely 5 countries a decade earlier. The year also saw a peak in global journalist imprisonments. According to key indices, media freedom, and public expression have steadily declined over the past 10 years, outlining a concerning trend.

The session aims to be a safe discussion space between civil societies from all across the globe. It is dedicated to unravel the multifaceted challenges encountered by civil societies in the face of shrinking civic space and declining freedom, while also exploring strategies to reclaim and preserve their essential role in shaping societies.
